About Dryad Woodland Enterprise, Isle of Wight

Woodland management on the Isle of Wight

Whether individually or collectively, in the form of copses, woodland and forests, trees perform an incredibly significant role in our lives and landscape. Throughout the Isle of Wight, Dryad Woodland Enterprise is committed to maintaining these fascinating organisms, managing and improving the environments in which they grow.

Dryad Woodland Enterprise was established by Matt Huxley in 2017 with the aim of developing a company whose guiding principles centred on sensitive tree care, sustainable environmental improvement and an holistic approach to habitat restoration. Initially working as an independent sub-contractor for a number of well-respected local woodland workers and tree surgeons, Dryad Woodland Enterprise has since grown to encompass a broad range of woodland work, coppice restoration, forestry.

12 years knowledge and expertise

Having spent the last 12 years accumulating knowledge and expertise in woodland and forest management, Matt has recently established Dryad Woodland Enterprise to focus specifically on developing greater public awareness of the Isle of Wight’s wooded landscape as an environmental and economic resource.

The woodland economy

Perhaps ironically, as funding belts tighten and financial uncertainty continues to cast its shadow there has never been a more exciting time to be actively involved in sustainable land management. In a post-Brexit UK our woods and forests must pay for themselves if they are to continue to perform their role as some of the nation’s most valuable habitat refuges. The message is simple: Woodland conservation and productivity can no longer be considered to be mutually exclusive.

An unmanaged wood is dark, lacking the rich biodiversity of a healthy, sustainably worked wood. Active coppicing and thinning regimes, coupled to regular ride and track-edge cutting encourages plants, invertebrates and animals to colonise and use the whole mosaic of the wood. Proper, informed and sensitive management increases both biodiversity and productivity.

Previous and on-going contracts include Forestry Commission forest maintenance, commercial timber harvesting operations, amenity tree and woodland management for Brighstone Parish Council and many smaller private garden-tree operations. Sensitivity and sustainability underpin all our activities, be they large or small.
